Wedge Indentation of Two Phase Materials.

Abstract

A theoretical investigation has been made of the forces required to indent a type of ductile layered two phase material by a rigid smooth wedge. The semi-infinite material considered here has a central phase with contiguous regions on either side which have a yield strength either higher or lower than the central phase. Using plasticity limit theorems and simple compatible displacement fields, upper bound forces are obtained for symmetric indentation. Results for the entire range of identation sizes have been determined. For the case when the outer regions have a higher yield strength than the central phase, the forces found as the indentation width approaches the spacing between the outer layers are lower than may have been anticipated.
