Physics of Free Atoms and Optically Pumped Electronic Devices.

Abstract

The authors have developed a simple method for analyzing light shifts of magnetic resonance frequencies for optically pumped Zeeman multiplets. They have discovered an important new high-density regime for optically pumped alkali vapors. This regime will make possible the construction of cheap miniaturized magnetometers and, perhaps, gyroscopes. Powerful new methods to investigate non-P excited states of alkali atoms have been developed. Lifetimes and hyperfine structures of excited S, D and F states have been measured.
