Some Vibrational Characteristics of a Combined Column-Beam-Mass System.

Abstract

An exploratory investigation is made of the vibrational characteristics of a cantilever beam with a concentrated mass at one end and with the other end rigidly attached to the top of a vertical column; the bottom end of the column is fixed. The transverse bending of the beam in the horizontal plane is coupled with the torsional vibration of the column. This model was taken as a simple representation of the cockpit motion machine at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Bedford, the object being to learn something of the vibrational characteristics of the machine. The equations of motion are separately derived for the torsional vibration of a fixed-free column and for the transverse vibration of a fixed-free beam, with and without a concentrated mass. The frequency equation for the combined column-beam-mass system is then obtained.
