Inventory in Motion: Does the C-5A Make it Practicable.

Abstract

The report examines whether the C-5A aircraft can alone support fully, the new logistic strategy of 'Inventory in Motion'. The report considers projected airlift capacity and limitations, in relation to foreseeable Army needs, and concludes that traffic magnitude and cost effectiveness make an airlift-sealift combination imperative. Reduced inventories, with reliance on accessible in-transit stocks, demand fullest exploitation of containerization, documentation, and handling concepts including a proposed application of the nine digit locator system to shipments.
