AWOL Reduction. A Case Study.

Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to examine the current serious AWOL problem in the United States Army. The AWOL rate has risen sharply over the past five years. The Department of the Army premise is that the way to combat the rise is to intensify attention on small unit leadership. This essay concentrates on the role of middle level management, the brigade level. A case study is made of the AWOL prevention program in one large CONUS training base brigade. Lessons learned have possible wider application. As the Army is reduced, this readiness inhibiting problem of AWOL's takes on increased significance and must be reduced. (Author)
