The Middle East. The World Plays Russian Roulette.

Abstract

The events of the summer and fall months of 1970 have focused into a clearly explosive situation in the Mideast. Four Western airliners were hijacked; a 90-day cease-fire has created nothing but unrest; and the leader of the most important Arab nation has passed away leaving a critical power vacuum. The US, given the unwanted role of being the champion of Israel, must somehow take a forceful enough position to convince the Russians that it is absolutely necessary to reach a peaceful Mideast settlement in order to avoid a direct military confrontation between the two superpowers.
