Dynamic Analysis of Open Loop Mechanisms. Part I.

Abstract

The report contains the analysis performed to derive the differential equations of motion for a general, open loop, spatial mechanism using the Lagrangian energy approach. The derivation uses closed loop (4x4) transformation matrix methods which are modified so they can be used in the analysis of open loop mechanisms. The report (and the analysis) is divided into two parts. In Part I, the equations necessary to analyze the motion of a mechanism, which can have only force inputs, are derived. A FORTRAN computer program called DYNAMO (DYNamic Analysis of Mechanisms-Open Loop) was written to implement the equations of motion. The final version of the program, which automatically sets up and solves the equations of motion, can perform both dynamic motion analysis and dynamic force analysis of an open loop mechanism.
