Immunoprophylaxis for Control of 'Dirofilaria immitis'.

Abstract

A series of studies was conducted relating to immunological aspects of Dirofilaria immitis infection in the dog. Special emphasis was given to a study of immunological control of dirofilariasis with the use of x-irradiated third-stage larvae as a vaccine. One trial was performed to determine a suitable level of irradiation of larvae for use as a vaccine, and two trials were undertaken to determine the effectiveness of single and double vaccination in protecting dogs from subsequent infections with viable larvae. One trial was undertaken to determine the value of sonicated third-stage larvae combined with adjuvant as a vaccine. Another trial was undertaken to determine the fate of adult D. immitis surgically implanted subcutaneously or intraperitoneally, and the effect of these worms on subsequent exposure to infective larvae.
