The Design of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter for Transonic Flows,

Abstract

. ;DAAH01-72-C-0089DA-1-M-262303-A-214RD73-25*Laser velocimeters, *Flowmeters, Doppler systems, Transonic flowDesignDesign considerations for laser doppler velocimeters suitable for transonic flow measurements are presented. The optical and mechanical elements of an instrument designed for such application are described in detail. The device is of the differential doppler-backscatter configuration and uses an argon laser. Independent and simultaneous measurement of two orthogonal velocity components is accomplished by using both the 4880 and 5145 angstrom argon wavelengths. Results of preliminary velocity measurements in a two-dimensional transonic nozzle and an open jet are presented to illustrate the performance of the velocimeter. (Author)
