Review of Selected Aspects of Depot-Level Maintenance Support of Aircraft: Economy of Scale (Sub-Task 1).

Abstract

The report is the final report on Phase a of Subtask 1 of LMI Task 73-2. In phase a the Institute was to explore the possibility of developing economy of scale guidelines and criteria applicable to depot level maintenance of aircraft. It is recommended that no additional effort be expended in the area of economies of scale in aeronautical depots. This recommendation was made because the existing methodologies for identifying economies and diseconomies of scale in an industrial environment are inadequate, each of the aeronautical depots differ in terms of role, mission, capability, management, etc., thus a common basis of comparison does not exist, and the gains attributed to economy of scale, as documented in the literature, are small and seldom can be distinguished from zero.
