Clinical Evaluation of a Method for Plaque Removal Using a Single-Tufted Toothbrush,

Abstract

A single-tufted toothbrush attachment to an electric toothbrush holder was recently made available as a method for increasing the effectiveness of interdental cleansing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinically an adjunct method of plaque removal from inaccessible areas of the dental arches using a single-tufted toothbrush attachment. Results for a total of 560 teeth examined showed a mean plaque reduction of 73% for patients brushing with their own method. This reduction was increased significantly to 95% when the adjunct method was used. A total of 3,360 gingival sites were examined for irritation. No significant increase in irritation was noted with the new tip. The findings of this study suggest that present methods of toothbrushing are inadequate and the use of this adjunct method in the daily oral physiotherapy regimen may be indicated for greater plaque removal.
