Development of German-English Machine Translation System.

Abstract

GUISTICS, Syntax, Transformational grammars, Computer programmingThe report documents performance on a five month R+D effort oriented toward completion of a pilot system for machine translation of German scientific and technical literature into English. Work on grammer formalism concentrated mainly on increasing the power of the subscript grammer to prevent intermediate 'forced' readings. Work in system construction concentrated on the completion of the grammer maintenance programs and on the core of the system programs used by all analysis and production algorithms. The linguistic work concentrated on the coverage of the German surface syntax, the 'choice rules' for the generation of the corresponding standard structures (deep structures), and their grammatical description.
