A Limited Analysis of the Management of Test Pilots in the United States Air Force.

Abstract

Interviews with 38 test pilots and managers of test pilots were used to define the problem areas and structure a questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to 1221 domestic members of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots in order to assess a wide base of test pilot opinion on factors affecting the effectiveness of test pilots. Data were reduced using BMD Biomedical Computer Programs. Contingency table analysis was used to determine test pilot consensus. Management documents were used to assess a formal statement of USAF policy. Career histories of USAF test pilots were analyzed in order to gain historical data on USAF test pilot use.
