Equatorial Ionospheric Research Using Satellites and Ground-Based Radar Methods.

Abstract

Ionospheric irregularities in the F region were studied using three techniques; the occurrence of spread-F echoes on ionograms, by direct backscatter recordings at 27.8 MHz and a study of scintillations occurring at SHF frequencies on satellite transmissions. Nairobi ionograms for 1964-70 have been analyzed for spread-F occurrence. Direct backscattered echoes on 27.8 MHz from patches of irregularities in the F-region have been recorded over a twelve-month period. Recordings of SHF transmission from the satellite Intelstat III-F4 were made at the East African Telescommunications Company's station near Nairobi during March - May 1971.
