Application of the Krypton Exposure Technique (KET(R)) to Detection of Defects Associated with Low Cycle Metal Fatigue.

Abstract

An engineering program was conducted to evaluate a krypton gas/exposure technique as a method of detecting minute defects on various metal surfaces. Such defects are associated with the early stages of low cycle metal fatigue. The program included: (1) preparation of test specimens from seven metal alloys presently used in aircraft weapon system hardware, (2) generation of defects on the surface of each specimen by cyclic bending, (3) detection of these defects by use of krypton gas and other non-destructive inspection techniques, and (4) comparative evaluation of the inspection results. These results indicated a significant potential for application of the krypton gas exposure technique, coupled with the need for further investigation to determine the source and solution of problems uncovered during this program.
