Magnetic Tape Unit Error Rate Definition and Specification.

Abstract

THE VALIDITY OF THE PROPOSITION AND USES RESULTS OF THE TESTS TO ASSESS THE ERROR PERFORMANCE OF SOME TYPICAL MILITARIZED TAPE UNITS. Tested units exhibited error rates less than 10 to the minus 9th power, up to two orders of magnitude lower than quoted by vendors, indicating conservative performance estimates on their part. There follows a convenient means for specifying the error rates necessary to achieve a desired level of data reliability during operation and a discussion of test requirements based on the analysis formulated earlier in the paper. An analysis establishing the practical bound of three on the number of rereads of an erroneously transferred data block required to distinguish transient errors concludes the paper. (Author)
