Chronocoulometric Investigation of Adsorption in Molten Nitrates.
Abstract
The adsorption of chloride, bromide, lead(II), and cadmium(II) on mercury in molten nitrates at 145 and 250C was investigated by double potential step chronoulometry. No adsorption was found for chloride, bromide, and for lead(II) and cadmium(II) in the presence of a large excess of chloride. An apparent adsorption of lead(II) and cadmium(II) was found in the presence of bromide. The results obtained suggest that this is due to the formation of an insoluble mercury-lead or cadmium-bromide compound. Qualitative experimental evidence for the existence of such a compound in molten nitrates was obtained. (Author)
