Injection Laser Terrain Following System (ILTFS).

Abstract

IDANCE, Navigational aids, Injection lasers, Low level, Performance(Engineering)Terrain followingA model has been developed of a subsystem designed to sense the trend of the terrain ahead of low flying rotary wing aircraft. This sensor subsystem, a forerunner of a terrain following system, incorporates a high peak power injection laser transmitter and an optical receiver with a high sensitivity silicon avalanche detector. In operation, the slant range from the aircraft to the terrain is continuously measured to sense terrain variations. Experimental data have confirmed the results of a performance analysis which indicates that the system is capable of determining the terrain trend at a horizontal range of 300 m along the aircraft flight vector under background limited conditions.
