Beam Quality of Pulsed Organic Dye Lasers.

Abstract

Various aspects of flashlamp-pumped organic dye laser efficiency and beam quality are investigated. A coaxial Marx-Bank driver circuit and flashlamp system are described. Shock wave induced optical distortion in the active solution was identified as a cause for premature laser termination. Beam quality experiments and theoretical analysis indicate that intrinsically strong amplified spontaneous emission effects are responsible for the relatively large beam divergence typically observed in pulsed dye lasers. Flux-injection techniques and mode-locking in dye lasers are discussed as possible remedial measures. (Author)
