Laser Kinetic Data Development.

Abstract

The objectives of this contract were to investigate the possibility of a CO chain reaction chemical laser based on O2 + CS chemistry and to model various schemes, particularly gas dynamic expansion, for extracting more power from CO chemical lasers. The direct reaction of O2 + CS was investigated experimentally. Measurements of the vibrational energy distribution of CO from the CS + O2 reaction with a Fabry-Perot microwave resonator/CO chemical laser system were also part of the effort on the first objective. The second effort involved the CO chemical laser modeling code developed under a previous MICOM contract. This computer program was modified to include the cooling effects of gas dynamic expansion through a supersonic nozzle on chemically-formed CO. Both nozzle-cooled and non-nozzle-cooled chemical lasers were modeled. The modeling code was further modified to determine the effect of gas additives on the laser output characteristics.
