Axisymmetric Elastic Deformations and Stresses in Orthotropic Sandwich Cylinders under Uniform External Hydrostatic Pressure.

Abstract

Equations describing the stresses in orthotropic sandwich cylinders under hydrostatic pressure are derived. These equations are used to plot design curves for these cylinders in a range of diameters from 13 inches to 25 inches and up to an applied pressure of 10,000 psi. Double wall composite sandwich cylinders are compared to cellular sandwich shells fabricated from aluminum and to conventional rib-stiffened cylinders. Finally, sandwich cylinders fabricated with 'S' glass facings and graphite facings are compared. (Author-PL)
