Characteristics of Magnetospheric Substorms and Their Effects upon Spacecraft: A Selected Bibliography,

Abstract

During the past 15 years many different NASA-launched satellites in earth orbit and deep space have collected an enormous amount of data which has been used to develop detailed models of the earth's magnetic field and plasma environment. Several of the spacecraft in the outer magnetosphere have experienced anomalous behavior and sometimes failures which, in most cases, were unexplained. Recently, some of these unwanted space events have been correlated with magnetospheric substorms. In an effort to shed more light on this problem and to facilitate research in this area the authors have prepared this bibliography. It is divided into two parts: Characteristics of magnetospheric substorms, and effects upon spacecraft. This material provides scientists and engineers a present day description of the substorm environment and consequences upon synchronous satellites. The space environment articles were limited to post- 1967 papers to provide the latest information on the fast developing definition of magnetospheric substorm phenomena.
