Droplet Spectra in Layer-Clouds,

Abstract

A model is constructed for the determination of droplet spectra in layer clouds with regions of supersaturation and unsaturation, as may be the case for steady layers under a subsidence inversion. Droplet spectra distributions within the cloud have been obtained by the solution of the steady-state spray equation, which has been solved by a finite difference technique. The dependence of droplet spectra on conditions of supersaturation, population of activated nuclei and cloud thickness has been established. Distribution of supersaturation across layer clouds are not available; realistic droplet distribution are obtained, however, for estimates of supersaturation that appear reasonable. The suggestion is put forth that in widespread continental layer clouds droplet evaporation may occur at the base of the cloud and droplet condensation at the top. Also in this case, reasonable values of droplet distribution may be obtained by the use of the spray equation. (Author)
