An Ion Beam Probe Diagnostic Technique for Laboratory Plasmas.

Abstract

Ion beam probing has been shown to be a general purpose diagnostic tool for magnetically confined plasmas. A complete system was designed, constructed, and operated on a number of laboratory plasmas to demonstrate the applicability of beam proving to laboratory devices. The results demonstrate that the advantages of ion beam probing can be achieved with modest expenditure of time and resources. The various components of a complete beam probe system have been investigated theoretically and experimentally for the first time. The results show that the beam probe system is dominated by electron impact ionization, as expected, that simple detectors have several limitations, and that the feedback controlled electrostatic energy analyzer demonstrates the spatial and time resolution expected from the theoretical analysis.
