Estimating the Communications Coverage for UHF Ground-to-Air Radio Systems.

Abstract

Estimating the coverage which can be obtained for reliable line-of-sight ground-to-air communications is difficult when relatively low power transmitters are employed and significant multipath fading is anticipated. An analysis and computer simulation of this problem is presented which can be used to determine coverage area as a function of many variables which include site elevation, aircraft altitude, type of terrain, polarization, frequency, and antenna characteristics. The propagation effects of refraction and divergence at small angles with respect to the horizon are included in the analysis. (Author)
