Some Biophysical and Microchemical Properties of Oral Structures in Health and Disease.

Abstract

The study seeks answer to new questions concerning the preventive aspects of dental caries and periodontal disease by use of clinical and biophysical procedures. Specific objectives were as follows: Determine the role of Streptoccus mutans in the subclinical stage of carious lesions; determine any distinguishing morphological characteristics of S. mutans in order to identify its variants, S. sanguis, S. salivarius and S. fecalis; determine morphological and chemical properties of caries susceptible areas in tooth structure; and study the periodontal characteristics of the calculus-tooth structure interface and the adjacent gingival tissues.
