A Numerical Method for Antennas Recessed in a Cavity or a Waveguide Which Opens into a Half-Space.

Abstract

The problem considered is that of a perfectly conducting obstacle or probe in a waveguide or a cavity which opens into a half-space. A modal solution to the problem is described in terms of 'open waveguide modes.' The open waveguide modes are defined, a method for evaluating them presented, and finally they are used in the solution of the above mentioned problem. Numerical data is presented for the case of an air filled and a dielectric loaded parallel plate cavity which opens into a half-space. While the current on the probe is assumed to be known for the numerical calculations, equations are given which could be solved for the probe current. Numerical difficulties were encountered in attempting to calculate the open waveguide modes for a rectangular waveguide. (Author)
