Studies Relative to Possible Laser Pumped by Nuclear Beta Rays. I. Optical Spectra of LiTmF4 Doped with a Rare Earth Ion,

Abstract

A study has been made of the optical spectra of single-crystal LiTmF4 doped with a rare earth ion with the objective of determining the feasibility of using this material as a nuclear pumped laser. The rare earth dopant would be pumped by the beta radiation in the nuclear decay of Tm170 artifically created by bombarding the non-radioactive crystal with thermal neutrons. The optical spectra were therefore recorded before and after the crystals were irradiated by nuclear energy. The principal results of the study are as given below. (Modified author abstract)
