Oblique Diffraction and Analysis of Curved Diffraction Grating Strain Gages.

Abstract

Analysis is presented for the new application of diffraction grating strain gages to the measurement of dynamic shear strain during torsional wave propagation in hollow tubes. The problem of oblique diffraction of light from curved diffraction gratings is solved in general. Corrective measures were discovered which minimize the undesirable effects arising from the complex grating curvature. This report is the first of three in a series that will treat the measurement of finite amplitude, dynamic torsional strain waves in hollow tubes. From these studies, important dynamic material parameters may be inferred. The second report is to discuss an analytical sensitivity study of real effects which occur with use of this gage, including rigid rotation of the tube, lateral and vertical displacements, and calibration procedures. The third report will present results obtained from candidate dynamic tests. (Author)
