Radiation Damage in Solids and Phonon Scattering.
Abstract
The report describes experimental and theoretical work on the use of phonon scattering techniques to study defects in solids. Low temperature thermal conductivity measurements were made on tin, tin-cadmium, sapphire, tourmaline and fluoroapatite in the range 4 to 77K. Work is described on improved techniques of generating surface waves and of measuring surface wave attenuation. Waves were generated using wedges and interdigital transducers on removalble plaques. Attenuation changes were measured using insertion loss changes, and absolute values of attenuation were obtained by probing the beam using optical diffraction. Measurements were made on surfaces with bonded powder, and on quartz surfaces subject to particle irradiation. In the latter case the effect of irradiation was too small to be measured. Theoretical studies include radiative heat transport in solid composites and thermoelectric power of metals. (Author)
