Calculation of a 5 inch/54 Muzzle Blast Using a Multi-Material Hydrodynamic Code.

Abstract

One-, two- and seven material versions of the two-dimensional hydrodynamic code, SHELL, were used to calculate the blast field about the muzzle of a 5 inch/54 Naval gun. The two- and seven-material codes use a frozen flow model with diffusion and mixing of species accounted for only artificially by the codes. The seven-material code uses real gas equations of state. Velocity and pressure in the blast field are compared for each of the calculations. The results of the calculations indicate that the two-material and seven-material results were essentially the same, but differ in some respects from the one-material model. The results show that real gas effects do not need to be considered in computing gun blast with the frozen flow model. (Author)
