Reduced Oxygen Tension for Recovery of (Group A) Streptococci from Throat Cultures,

Abstract

The recovery of bacitracin-sensitive (Group A) beta hemolytic streptoccocci from the oropharynx may, at times, present difficulty to the uninitiated medical bacteriologist. Since the isolation and identification of these pathogenic microorganisms is of paramount importance to the clinician, a method is presented which has increased the opportunity of isolating strains of this pathogen. The data recovered after processing 29,985 throat cultures over a 12-month period and the benefits of the proposed system are discussed. (Author)
