Xanthocillin as a Local Antibiotic and Allergen,

Abstract

Since its introduction as a locally applied wide-spectrum antibiotic, Xanthocillin has found wide application. In addition to other favorable properties, Xanthocillin was initially regarded as producing no side effects whatsoever. However, acute contact eczemas and attendent allergodermas have recently been observed in an increasing number of cases, along with an increased rate of sensitization (11%). What is necessary is that indications should be established more rigorously, that users of the drug should be given more detailed information on side effects, and that drugs should be given names related to their respective contents.
