Increased Electrical Energy Outputs from Modified M371A1 Heat Projectiles,

Abstract

Product-improvement tests have been conducted on the 90-mm M371A1 HEAT projectile by the Harry Diamond Laboratories. The ultimate objective of the improvements was to increase the function reliability of the projectile when it strikes targets at angles approaching 65 deg. This objective was determined to be attainable by increasing the electrical energy output from the round's piezoelectric element. To accomplish this task, Picatinny Arsenal devised several major modifications of the round: (1) a different piezoid material, (2) new piezoid assembly configurations, and (3) new nose-cap designs.
