A Colorimetric Method for the Determination of 2,4,5-Trinitrotoluene.

Abstract

A semiquantitative colorimetric determination of 2,4,5-trinitrotoluene in the presence of other TNT and DNT isomers has been developed. Gas chromatographic analysis of crude TNT samples has revealed the existence of a constant ratio between the amounts of 2,4,5- and 2,3,4-TNT. Under the assumption that there is a negligible quantity of DNT in crude TNT, the total TNT isomer content may be estimated through colorimetric determination of 2,4,5-TNT. This method is of potential value for adaptation as an automated on-line monitoring device in TNT production.
