Speed of Comprehending Submarine Fire Control Displays: 2. Further Evidence of Right-Left Differences

Abstract

A series of preliminary investigations suggested that right-handed men have more trouble understanding the direction left than the direction right. Two experiments present further confirmatory evidence that the mental representation of the term 'right' is simpler than that of 'left.' Experiment 1 was simple extension of a series of earlier experiments, and showed that printing words top-to-bottom in displays did not eliminate the asymmetry in reaction times between true matches for right and left. Experiment 2 examined the verification of displays containing sentences and pictures.
