The Effects of Conditions of Cerebral Anoxia, on Phospholipids, Metabolism, and Circulation of the Brain.
Abstract
The phospholipid composition of the blood plasma, whole red cells, and ghosts of healthy volunteers, patients with sickle cell anemia not in crisis and of patients with sickle cell crisis were examined. It was found that patients with sickle cell anemia show a relative increase of phospholipids in the ghosts which are enhanced in patients with sickle cell crisis. During sickle cell crisis the concentration of phosphatidylglycerol of blood plasma is significantly increased. Preliminary studies of the effect of norepinephrine on plasma and red cells from arterial and venous blood in anesthetized dogs demonstrate an increase of phosphatidylglycerol in the blood plasma and red cells subsequent to the norepinephrine infusion.
