Plasma Spectroscopy of Negative Ions for Applications to Ionospheric Research.

Abstract

An experimental investigation is made of a singlet P resonance in H(-) by means of photoabsorption spectra. The predicted resonance wavelength is 1129.5 A and a windowless vacuum uv apparatus which allows absorption studies on ionized species has been developed. Basic equipment is described. H(-) densities are generated in the afterglow of the Z-discharge through a mixture of hydrogen and cesium. The resonance was not observed, probably because of overlying 2-1 band lines of the H2 Lyman system which were more intense than originally predicted. However, the techniques developed in this work represent a significant contribution in that they for the first time allow time resolved absorption spectra on ionized species.
