Magnetic Neutron Diffraction Studies of PrCo5 and SmCo5.

Abstract

The authors have examined PrCo5 powder samples by x-ray and neutron diffraction in order to determine the magnetic moments on the Pr and Co atoms. These data were analyzed assuming different spin orientation models. The only model which gave reasonable results was one of ferromagnetic coupling of the Pr and Co moments with the moment lying along the c-axis. The moments, in Bohr magnetons, calculated in this way, are listed in tables for various temperatures. A SmCo5 powder sample using a Sm154 isotope was also studied by neutron diffraction and with the vibrating sample magnetometer. (Modified author abstract)
