AN/GSC-32 Voice/Data Modem Improvement.

Abstract

A report is made on the development and testing of two improvements to the AN/GSC-32 modem for 14.4 kbs and 19.2 kbs data transmission over nominal 4 kHz telephone channels. The purpose of the developments was to improve the error performance and decrease the acquisition time of the modem. The improved error performance of the modem was achieved by adding a unity coder at the receiver to correct errors using the redundancy inherent in Partial Response Coding. Acquisition time was decreased from 90 seconds to 12 seconds with an automatic preamble requiring only that the operator press a 'start' button. The improved AN/GSC-32 was tested over several simulated telephone channels and met or exceeded all contract requirements. (Modified author abstract)
