Laser Guided Boring of Major Caliber Gun Barrels. Phase III.

Abstract

The program proves the practicability of the concept of laser guidance in deep-hole boring. Test pieces were bored which proves that the boring head was guided by the laser guided feedback system. Phase III of the program converted a production deep-hole boring lathe to accept the laser optical guidance system. Test pieces were bored to assure proper alignment, and five MK 19 5 in./54 caliber gun barrels were bored under normal production conditions. The results indicate that using the guidance system, barrels can be bored with a maximum runout of .010 inches total indicator reading (TIR) and in approximately one-half of the time required by conventional machining.
