Statistical Sensitivity of the Average Backscattering Cross Sections for Normally Distributed Rough Surface Models.

Abstract

Statistical sensitivity formulas are derived for the average incoherent radar return from two dimensional, normally distributed rough surface models with Gaussian correlation. The variations in the normalized cross sections are obtained by perturbing slightly (1) the rms surface height and correlation length of the small scale roughness profile, and (2) the total mean square surface slope of the large scale component. The resulting sensitivity expressions are then applied to an ocean surface model characterized electrically by the complex permittivity of seawater at 10 GHz. (Modified author abstract)
