A Description of Linear and Nonlinear Computational Instability,

Abstract

A brief review and description of the problems of linear and nonlinear computational instability in numerical weather prediction models is presented. The phenomenon called aliasing error which misrepresents very short waves as long waves in a space grid is described. References to authoritative sources on the subject are provided. (Author)
