Estimating Wind Speed Changes at Land/Sea Boundaries,

Abstract

The absence or scarcity of wind speed observations in coastal waters is a persistent problem for meteorologists. Nomographs are presented which are designed to aid the forecaster in describing offshore wind fields on the basis of upwind land station observations. The nomographs are empirically derived from data taken over Lake Erie and Lake Ontario but should have sufficient applicability to most coastal locations. (Author)
