Materials for Phase Holographic Storage.

Abstract

Fe-doped LiNbO3, when heated to elevated temperature, can be used for multiple storage of fixed holograms. The report describes recent advances in the preparation and characterization of this material. Included are tailoring of oxidation/reduction treatments for the preparation of crystals suitable for multiple storage, and measurements of the resistivity, recording range, and write/erase asymmetry of these crystals at elevated temperatures. The results suggest areas of research necessary for improved understanding and performance. In work on other materials, holograms were recorded for the first time in photochromic LiNbO3. Also, theoretical and experimental analyses of various electro-optic materials were carried out to show that Fe-doped LiNbO3 remains the prime candidate for high-capacity archival storage. (Author)
