Investigation of Parameters Involved in Metal Processing Operations.

Abstract

The report summarizes the findings of several investigations involving the influence of process variables on the production of shapes with specified geometry and controlled microstructure. The studies included: the extrusion consolidation of pre-alloyed metal powders (7075 Aluminum and Rene 95); a refinement of the analysis and application of the ring compression test; the use of hardness testing to evaluate the strength of hot deformed product; investigations of the effect of processing variables on extruded product and extrusion pressures; the fabrication of a heated die forging system and a preliminary investigations of lubricants; an analysis of some published flow stress data for Ti-6Al-4V; studies of grain growth in some titanium-base alloys and a comparison of grain boundary and sub-boundary strengthening in aluminum.
