Research for Engine Demonstration of Erosion-Resistant Coating Effectiveness.

Abstract

The objectives of this program were to optimize the electroless nickel-plating procedure (PWATM 36) for titanium alloys (Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-6Al-4V) to provide a more uniform underlayer for the TIKOTE-C erosion-resistant coating system. TIKOTE-C is a proprietary titanium carbonitride coating. The PWA 36 electroless-nickel promised to provide a more uniform and less expensive underlayer for the TIKOTE-C, with greater adhesion to titanium and less fatigue strength reduction than the multiple layer electroless nickel, electrolytic-nickel combination previously used. The approach to the program was first to optimize the PWA 36 electroless nickel process parameters on both the Ti alloys to achieve maximum adhesion and minimum loss of fatigue strength. Metallographic examination of the coating disclosed uniform nickel and TIKOTE-C layers with clean, void-free bond lines at the titanium-nickel and nickel-TIKOTE-C interfaces.
