Electron Beam Welding of Breech Block Guides for the 5 inch/54 Cal. MK 42 Mod 10 Gun Mount Program.

Abstract

The report presents the results of an examination of the repair and reclamation of breech block guides for major caliber gun mounts using electron beam welding. The left and right hand aluminum bronze guides are subjected to degradation from contamination with propellant residue and the lack of lubrication and proper maintenance. During the conversion program, the blocks are examined and those with significant degradation are deemed unfit for further service. The study examined a repair scheme; to remove the worn portion and replace it with new material integrally joined by electron beam welding. The successful repair method is described and illustrated. The technical information is brief, as it is intended that it should be used only as a guide for similar work. (Author)
