Man/Machine Relationship in National Airspace System: Plan View Display Positioning.

Abstract

The investigation was an attempt to determine (1) the best angle that the plan view display (PVD) may be inclined while still permitting efficient operation with shrimpboats, (2) the properties of a feasible shrimpboat that will not slide so much as to produce loss of association with the target when used at the proposed angle of elevation, and (3) the properties of a feasible add-on device for fixing the PVD at the angle proposed. Several shrimpboat designs were fabricated and tested at 20, 25, and 30 degrees PVD inclinations, both in ideal conditions and in a simulated control situation with air traffic controllers.
