Efficiency Enhancement in Megawatt Level Broadband Microwave Amplifiers.

Abstract

The report covers the first six months of effort on a theoretical and experimental investigation of methods of improving the conversion efficiency of relatively broadband linear beam amplifiers operating at a megawatt of peak power. An initial electrical design of an S-band cloverleaf Twystron amplifier has been accomplished. A mechanical layout drawing has been generated. The main cloverleaf circuits have a cold pass band of 18.2% and a minimum hot band interaction impedance of 540 ohms. Beam and circuit parameters were input to the large signal program. The computer predicted performance shows a 10% bandwidth with minimum efficiency of 43%. Predicted band center efficiency is 56%. (Author)
